Services

Through its volunteer, licensed doctors, the clinic provides medical care to eligible patients, just like any family practitioner or internist. Our patients should consider the clinic their medical home. We also help eligible patients obtain needed medications and specialty care.  Future services will be announced, as they are available.

Free services include:
  • Medical care by licensed physicians
  • Continuity of care for chronic medical conditions
  • Laboratory testing
  • X-ray, MRI and CAT scans
  • Some specialty referrals
  • Diabetic meters and testing strips
  • A caring team working with you for your better health
The clinic serves adults who:
  • Live or work on Johns, James or Wadmalaw Island (zip codes 29455, 29487 and 29412)
  • Have no health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or VA medical benefits
  • Have household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level
What does 200% of the federal poverty level mean?

The United States Department of Health and Human Services establishes the federal poverty level. The Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic serves adults who earn at or below 200% of this level, which translates for the year 2011 to the following:

First Time Patients

If you are a first time patient, please review this information to understand how the Clinic works and what your responsibilities are.  In order to establish yourself as a patient, you will need to provide the following information that proves:

  • Personal identification such as a driver's license, passport, or other photo identification, birth certificate or social security card —AND—
  • Proof of residency on either Johns, Wadmalaw or James Island or be the dependent of someone who does. Provide an electric, gas, water or phone bill, etc. —OR—
  • Proof of employment on Johns, Wadmalaw or James Island such as pay stubs or a letter from your employer along with employer address and phone number. —AND—
  • If employed, provide proof of income for each member of the household, such as 4 weeks of pay stubs or a letter from employer stating monthly income —AND—
  • And you must have NO health insurance
