Fourth Annual Celebrity Golf Invitational 2011
With clear skies and ideal temperatures, Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic hosted its 4th Annual Celebrity Golf Invitational Monday, May 16, 2011, at Turtle Point Golf Course, Kiawah Island. Special thanks go to Kay Halsey, Steve Orban, Walt Nadzak and our many volunteers and five of our patients who worked hard to make the day a complete success.
The events for the day included the purchase of Mulligans, the “Beat Burger” contest, the Putting contest and the Foursome group event. Congratulations go to Karen Gibler for winning the “Beat Burger” contest! Karen is one of our 32 registered nurse volunteers who help make the Clinic a success.
Our celebrity participants were the honorable Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., Mayor, City of Charleston; Ken Burger, Post and Courier columnist; Bobby Cremins, head basketball coach at The College of Charleston; Chuck Driesell, head basketball coach at The Citadel; and, Kevin Higgins, head football coach at The Citadel.
The day was concluded with a sumptuous meal and Award Ceremony. Our guest celebrity, Mayor Joseph P. Riley, graciously spoke on the humble mission of the Clinic and thanked all the volunteers and donors who dedicate their time and resources to the uninsured residents of Johns, Wadmalaw and James Islands.
The success of the Celebrity Golf Invitational would not be possible without the support of the many sponsors and contributors who helped raise over $144,000 for the Clinic.

Fifth Annual Lowcountry Wine and Beer Festival 2011
After four exciting festivals, we were blessed with the best yet. A great wine selection in concert with the craft beers, blended beautifully with Richard Hege’s splendid meal. It did not stop there; however, as the four piece jazz band, Cobblestone Quartet, provided a lively beat for the evening.
Lori Leary did masterful magic as chairperson of this event and orchestrating over 100 appealing silent auction items. The items included wonderful works of art, an African Safari, mountain retreats, fishing excursion and a quail hunting venue. When all was done, the prizes awarded, the taps were dry and the music ended, BIFMC had netted $70,000 to carry on our mission of delivering healthcare to the working poor of our islands. No event is possible without the volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to support the clinic; we are truly grateful for each and every one of them.
