1000th Patient Visit
Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic celebrated its 1000th patient visit on January 23, 2009. Mrs. Johnson, sitting between her nurse and doctor, was surprised by Clinic staff with a greeting card and gift certificate in honor of the occasion. She first came to the Clinic November 17, 2008 having lost her health insurance. Her diabetes was severely out of control. She could not see to read. Her blood pressure and cholesterol were dangerously high. She was frightened.
The Clinic medical staff and volunteers provided life-saving care, blood tests, encouragement and treatment with donated medications from Welvista – all at no charge. With this help, she regained control of her diabetes. She can now see to read. She is taking control of her high blood pressure and high cholesterol. She no longer uses the emergency room for her primary care. The future is not so frightening anymore.

3000th Patient Visit
Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic celebrated its 3000th patient visit on September 4, 2009. Mr. Keith Bishop, sitting between his nurse and volunteer physician (a Hospitalist at Roper Saint Francis Healthcare), was happy to pose for a picture in honor of the occasion. Mr. Bishop first came to the Clinic July 8, 2009 having lost his business, his inherited family property and his health insurance. On that day, he was experiencing slight chest pain. He knew he had a family history of coronary heart disease. At a follow-up visit, it became clear that Mr. Bishop was in danger of having a heart attack. He was referred to our partner, Roper Saint Francis Healthcare without use of the emergency room. At his heart catheterization, his coronary artery was opened and two stents were placed in the artery to keep it open, all at no charge.
The Clinic’s medical volunteers and hospital partner provided life-saving care, encouragement and treatment, along with donated medications from Welvista – all at no charge. With this help and continuing Clinic care, Mr. Bishop avoided a heart attack and is regaining control of his health by treating his cholesterol, weight and early diabetes. His future now includes the assurance that he can work again.

6000th Patient Visit
Mr. Richard Byrd sits between Karen Gibler, RN and Sheridan Gibler, MD, a husband and wife medical team from Seabrook Island. They are our 32nd nurse and 28th doctor to volunteer at the Clinic, coming 2 half days each week. Mr. Byrd first came to the Clinic on 5/6/10 having lost his income producing property and thus his health insurance during a family illness. He was worried about a new skin lesion similar to a previously removed skin cancer. He also had no physician to treat his known hypertension. Dr. Gibler began treatment of Mr. Byrd’s hypertension and will continue to adjust his medication at scheduled Clinic follow- up visits. Welvista will provide needed medications at no charge. On 5/7/10, dermatologist Dr. Marta Hampton, a bi-weekly clinic volunteer examined and biopsied Mr. Byrd’s skin lesion. It was cancerous. On 6/11/10, surgeon Dr. Casey Fitts, who treats Clinic patients for free, removed Mr. Byrd’s cancerous skin lesion.
Mr. Byrd now has a free of charge “Medical Home” at the Clinic. Hopefully, this care will help him avoid the preventable serious complications of his hypertension and avoid any spread of his cancerous skin lesion.
