Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic is a non-profit organization in South Carolina whose purpose is to provide a medical home and continuing primary health care to lower-income, uninsured adults who live or work on Johns, Wadmalaw or James Island. Our goal is to create access to healthcare for those who either go without care or find themselves using the emergency room for their primary care. It is also our goal to be an asset to our community by reducing unfunded emergency room care in area hospitals. This helps hospital emergency rooms focus on providing true emergency care, keeps healthcare costs down for those who have insurance and ultimately saves the tax payer when the bill for unfunded care comes due.
Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic was founded in 2006 by Dr. Arthur Booth and Dr. Charlie Davis who retired here and saw a need for affordable healthcare. After a lot of prayers and fundraising, and with the help of the local and national Volunteers in Medicine staff, the Clinic was launched April 11, 2008.
The Clinic is conveniently located on Johns Island at 3226 Maybank Highway. We are funded by individual and church contributions, grants and fundraising events. The Clinic receives no state or federal money.
The Clinic has grown rapidly since opening April 11, 2008. For more information on our accomplishments, go the “Clinic Update” tab.
